Will Hahn coax opposition into returning to Parliament?

Johanes Hahn

However, representatives of the so-called “civic” part of the opposition told CdM that they would not just go back to the Parliament.

“We will talk to Hahn, but regardless his suggestions we will not be returning to the Parliament,” CdM unofficially leant in SDP.

No returning out of the blue

The Key coalition official from the URA Civic Movement, Dritan Abazovic, pointed out that “there was no chance that the opposition would be back to the Parliament”.

“I do not know what Hahn is going to say, but we’re not going back to the Parliament just like that. It is good that we will meet him, to present our part of the story. We cannot return to the Parliament out of the blue because I think the boycott has an effect and DPS must find a compromise,” Abazovic told CdM.

Asked what kind of compromise DPS should make in order for the opposition to return to the Parliament, Abazovic said:

“We want the issue of the attempted coup on election day to get a court epilogue and to hold repeated parliamentary elections together with the presidential elections. We also want the opposition to be allowed to participate in the electoral process preparation,” Abazovic said.

Who will give in?

Analyst Srdja Vukadinovic said he expected the international community to put a kind of pressure in order for the opposition to return to the Parliament, but that “it could hardly deliver results”.

“Part of the opposition may return if their demand to hold new elections is fulfilled. They, apparently, will not return if that condition is not met. Therefore the key issue of the talks between the opposition representatives and Hahn will be the possibility of calling new elections. Hahn said that the boycott was not a wise solution, but it was the opposition’s legitimate demand,” Vukadinovic said.

He said that there was the pressure on DPS and Dusko Markovic’s government, because the current situation is unviable.

“It is unacceptable that 39 MPs are boycotting the Parliament. This situation is not acceptable because you create an image before the EU member states that there is internal instability in Montenegro, which may cause problems when entering the EU and NATO. It remains to be seen in the future who is going to give in – either the opposition will return to the Parliament after being granted certain concessions or DPS will call new elections,” Vukadinovic said.
