Senator: Montenegro – a tiny country which is to help NATO to protect the Adriatic Sea

Member of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations Eliot L. Engel welcomed the decision of that body to unanimously approve the accession of Montenegro to NATO and called on the Senate to do the same at the earliest opportunity.

The committee unanimously backed ratifying the Montenegro-NATO accession protocol.

The full Senate is the next to vote for it. The US Constitution requires a two-thirds vote in the 100-member Senate for approval of new NATO members.

“Although Montenegro is a tiny country, its membership in NATO will help the alliance to protect the Adriatic coast and continue contributing to peace, democracy and stability in the Balkans,” said Engel, according to the Mina news agency.

According to him, this also confirms continuing vitality of NATO and collective security as a guarantor in Europe.

“I urge the Senate to ratify the protocol at the earliest opportunity,” Engel said.
