Constitutional Court: Mother allowances are not a priority

Laws concerning the mothers of three or more children, as well as provisions stipulating the reduction of allowances are not the Constitutional Court’s priority  and there is no legal deadline to decide on them, said the president of the Constitutional Court Dragomir Draskovic appearing on the TVCG public broadcaster’s socio-political interview show Iz Pravog Ugla (From the Right Angle).

Draskovic says that every ultimatum given to the court is not appropriate for a democratic society and does not contribute to the integrity of the institution.

“I cannot speak in detail about the case, because the court proceedings are ongoing. The files have just been submitted, contrary to the first case on which the Constitutional Court has already issued the act and partially decided. The mother allowances case has not been given the priority status. Priority cases are those containing legally prescribed deadline for the court action,” said Draskovic.

As a reminder, the mothers’ spokesperson Zeljka Savkovic said at the rally held on 8 March that the protest would be radicalised if the Constitutional Court does not decide on the constitutionality of allowance reduction until the end of the week.

“This is not blackmail, this is not an ultimatum, but we will take radical measures. We will not announce what radical measures we will take until the Constitutional Court announces its decision,” she said.

The mothers have been protesting for eight days now because their allowances have been reduced from €336 and €192 to €264 and €144 respectively.
