Will opposition boycott Herceg Novi elections as well?

President of Montenegro Filip Vujanovic set the date for local elections in Herceg Novi for May 7th, and the opposition is considering boycott, it was told by their representatives to Dan daily.

Vujanovic Cabinet stated that the decision of the date of elections is fully legal on the day it is passed, and it would be published in Official Gazette of Montenegro and Official Gazette of Montenegro – municipalities.

Complete assembly of Herceg Novi decided to shorten their mandates, which lead to early elections.

Democrats’ official Boris Bogdanovic said that the party is analyzing current political climate in Montenegro with special attention and responsibility, with special accent on local elections in Herceg Novi.

„Democrats are dedicated to the unity of opposition, so we will make a decision on conditions of the elections together. However, Democrats would not be surprised if Special Prosecutor meddled in the election process once again, and with the same intensity he did before Niksic election list submission“, Bogdanovic said.

Democrats warn Special Prosecution to perform his duties without leading campaign for any political subject, submitting evidence to citizens “for the claims he made on election day in Montenegro, and the last day of election lists submission in Niksic”.

Vice President of URA Dritan Abazovic insist on unity of opposition as well.

„Montenegro is not ready to hold any elections and we should not play DPS games. We need to offer a sustainable solution, and to have Herceg Novi and Niksic elections held again, which should aim to resolve the political crisis. Anything else would be irresponsible. I expect we will be united as we were in Niksic”, Abazovic said.

Demos leader Miodrag Lekic said that the situation is difficult and political system irregular.

„Such conditions make it difficult to take part in elections. Opposition needs to make an unanimous decision”, Lekic said.

Opposition parties decided to boycott Niksic elections after announcements that DF leaders Mandic and Knezevic would be arrested. DF said that it was still early to decide whether Herceg Novi elections need to be boycotted.

„These elections depend on many factors and it is still early to make decisions. We need to see what will happen in Niksic first. DPS is minority in Herceg Novi, at least that is certain”, DF stated.

President of SNP Herceg Novi board Danijela Djurovic said that this party is preparing for the upcoming elections.

„Herceg Novi has always demonstrated a high standard of democracy. We expect this to happen this time as well, despite DPS manipulations. We believe Herceg Novi will again become a city lead by the opposition”, Djurovic said.

President of SDP Herceg Novi board Dragan Simrak said that this party would enlist for all elections that have free and fair conditions.

„We hope such conditions will be created for Herceg Novi elections. That is a basic precondition for enlisting in elections. SDP initiated a reinstatement of president of Herceg Novi assembly on Thursday, together with Novska lista. This lead to DPS losing leadership and new parliamentary majority forming, which is one of the conditions to have free and fair elections”, SDP official said.
